Linda Black (1935 - 2012)

Linda Black, 77, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 in Kennesaw Hospital in Marietta, Ga., after a long illness. Services were held on Friday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. Philip. Burial will be at Canton Cemetery on December 13, 2012 at 1 pm.
Black retired after 35 years of employment in reservations with Delta Air Lines. She served as chair of the Retirement Committee and the Fair Share Outreach Committee. She lived in Atlanta for 55 years where she sang for more than 25 years in Festival Singers and the choir at The Cathedral of St. Philip. She was an expert in petit point and was known for her restoration skills.
She was born in Canton, Miss., on Sept. 4, 1935 to Floyd A. Black and Eugenia Howell Black, both now deceased. She grew up in Canton and graduated from Canton High School as Class of 1953 valedictorian. She was Miss Canton High School and senior class president. She played alto saxophone in the high school band and also in the school dance orchestra.
Black attended Sophie Newcomb College, now Tulane University, and then the University of Mississippi, where she graduated with high honors and as a member of Mortar Board. She served as president of Phi Mu fraternity.
Survivors include sisters Peggy Cheape Hardin (Tyse) of Marietta, Ga., and Betty Black Mitchell (Elmer) of Madison, Miss; nephews Michael Black Mitchell of Oxford, Miss, John Tyson Hardin Jr. of Atlanta, and Scott Howell Hardin of Atlanta; niece Amy Caroline Hardin Chambers of Atlanta; eight great-nephews and great-nieces of Georgia and Mississippi.
