Josephine Imburgia of Dongan Hills, a homemaker and retired seamstress, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. She was 87.
Born Josephine Abato in Manhattan, she settled in Dongan Hills in 1969.
A member of the former Ladies International Garment Workers Union, Mrs. Imburgia went to work as a seamstress when she was 15 years old. For more than 30 years, she was employed at various locations in Downtown Manhattan. She retired 36 years ago, after moving to Staten Island.
Her favorite job was helping raise her family. Mrs. Imburgia lived in a two-family house with her daughter and was able to see her grandchildren grow, marry and have their own children.
"She was a great mom, very traditional, very devoted to her family," said her daughter, Geraldine Apollonio. "My mother always made sure she called old friends and family. As people got older they couldn't travel as much, but she was always in contact with her old friends and relatives."
Mrs. Imburgia was a member of the South Beach Senior Center.
Her husband of 50 years, Bartolo, died in 1990.
In addition to her daughter, Geraldine, surviving Mrs. Imburgia are her son, Bob; two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's R.C. Church, both Dongan Hills. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
