Emma was the daughter of Aron and Anna Oberg. On October 6, 1920 she was married to Frithiof Fritz "Fred" Backman. They were the parents of one daughter, Doris and three sons, Donald, Raymond, and Fred. Raymond died as a toddler. In 1930 Fritz and Emma lived in Fargo, North Dakota with their children Donald, Doris and Fred. Emma's 72 year old mother, Anna Oberg, also lived with them. (1930 census)
