After graduating from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1948, Jim served his country with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War from 1948 to 1952. On April 24, 1954 Jim married Helen M. Hanson at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor.

He was employed at Felhofer Brothers in Valmy until 1969. Jim then went into partnership with LeRoy Ehlers in the same building Felhofer's had been in. In 1979 he operated his own auto body repair business in Valmy until he retired in 2007.

Jim will be deeply missed his wife, Helen; four children, James, Micheal (Jody), (and their children, Rachel and Krista), daughter, Julie (Dan) Vandertie, (and their children, Karlee, Bridget and Austin), son, Steven (Brenda), (and their children, Nathan, Hannah and Isaac); three brothers, Lawrence (Margaret), Wallace (Dorothy), Thomas (Lois); sister, Theresa (Howard) Phillips; in-laws, Jean Widder, Eben (June) Hanson, Robert (Florence) Hanson, Don (Judy) Hanson, William (Virginia) Hanson, Florence (Don) Melchoir, Agnes Hanson, Joe Nelson; and many other friends.
