Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 23, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H on the same date. At the July 1862 Battle of Gettysburg, he was with his unit on the second day of the engagement as it was detailed late in the afternoon of July 2 to bolster the III Corps line near the Rogers House on Emmittsburg Road. There, after the Confederate assault on the Union lines, he was killed. Originally interred on the field, his body was brought home to lie in the family plot in Rahway, New Jersey,
