Son of William C. Cooke and Anne Eliza Conde. Montgomery was born in Ireland. Married to Josephine Evans. Fought in the Civil War with CO K, 62ND PA VOL INF. His three brothers, William Jr., ALexander, Samuel, and his father also served in the war, with one brother, Alexander, siding with the Confederacy. He was wounded at Gettysburg. All four brothers and their father returned from the war alive. Montgomery later acted as a guide in Soldiers and Sailors' Memorial Hall.
