Darrell L. Achenbach, 81, Geneva, formerly of Bloomington and a retired Country Companies executive, died Saturday (Nov. 2, 1991) at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva.
There will be a memorial service at 5 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Geneva, the Revs. Larry Hilkemann and Steven Good officiating. Burial will be private.
There will be no visitation. Yurs Wittenberg Funeral Home, Geneva, is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marguerite; one daughter, Kay Clancy, St. Charles; one son, William, Charlottesville, Va.; one brother, Dallas, Taylorville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Achenbach was born and reared on a farm in Christian County. He moved to Geneva with his family in 1946 and lived there until 1960, when an employment relocation brought him to Bloomington.
He joined Country Companies in 1948 as general manager of Country Mutual Fire Co., a position he held until 1957 when he was named general manager of Country Mutual after the consolidation of Country Mutual Fire and Country Mutual Casualty Cos. In 1962, Mr. Achenbach assumed the duties of Country Companies executive vice president. After his retirement in 1975, he and his wife, Marguerite, moved back to Geneva.
Prior to joining the insurance companies, Mr. Achenbach served 15 years with the Production Credit Corporation of St. Louis and the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of St. Louis.
Since his retirement, he had worked part-time as unofficial office manager of the law firm of Clancy and Krippner.
During his tenure with Country Companies, he held many positions of leadership in the insurance industry. These included: president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Cos.; director and president of the Illinois Insurance Information Service; board member of the National Association of Independent Insurers; director and president of the Conference of Mutual Casualty Cos.; and vice president of the Crop Insurance Research Bureau.
Mr. Achenbach also had served as president and first vice president of the Association of Commerce and Industry of McLean County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Methodist Church of Geneva or Delnor Community Hospital Health Care Foundation.
