Alfred Hopkins Gates was a dairy farmer in Langola Twp, Benton Co, Minnesota. He was the only child of William and Lydia Gates that grew to adulthood. There were two brothers who died young. Alfred was 12 years old when he lost his father. Then his mother was hospitalized with depression-related illness. During this time Alfred lived with Aunt and Uncle Heath in Little Falls and attended school there.
After this, he attended the State Normal school and during summer vacations worked in the shingle department of the Bridgman saw mill; operated the farm home at Rice from 1889 to 1896; attending business college and followed office work for a few years, taking a position as bookkeeper at the state reformatory in 1899 and later was appointed steward at that institution. He resigned in September, 1905, and again returned to the farm in Langola, Benton county, where he lived until he retired in 1933. Largely through his efforts, the Cooperative creamery of Rice was established and he served as secretary-treasurer of that organization for almost 25 years.
He married Olive Flint in 1903. To this union five children were born. Alfred Gates was a member of the North Star lodge 23 AF and AM, St. Cloud chapter 10 Royal Arch Mason, and Nazarene Commandery 24, Knight Templar. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church.
