KIMBERLEY
On Tuesday evening, December 30, there passed away one of the oldest and most respected pioneers of Euphrasia in the person of Thomas Abercrombie. The deceased was born in Enniskillen, Ireland, on March 17th, 1837. For 10 years he lived near Bolton in Albion Township from which he came to Euphrasia where he has lived for the past 67 years. In 1866 he was married to Eliza Jane Knott, of Euphrasia, who has proved a devoted wife in sharing the hardships of pioneer life first at Rocklyn and later at Kimberley 37 and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1842. For the past three years he has been in failing health and has been bedfast. He bore his sickness patiently and continued to take a keen interest in the activities of the community and country until several days before his death. Mr Abercrombie was a kind and a prominent worker in the public business of the township. For seven years he was a member of the municipal council and for fifteen years secretary of the Agricultural Society. For almost sixty years he was a member of the Orange Order in which he was very active. He was a member of Rocklyn Loyal Orange Lodge No 973 at the time of his death. He was a staunch Conservative and attended the Methodist church. He is survived by his widow and a family of eleven, five daughters and six sons. Mrs Jas Bothwell, Mrs James Marshall, Morley, Ellwood and Nicholas of British Columbia, Robert of Oxbow Sask. Mrs W Lawson of Wodehouse, Mrs S S Burritt, John Taylor and Della of Kimberley; and also twenty grandchildren and two great- grandchilden. The funeral took place from his late residence on New Year's Day to Markdale Public Cemetery. The service at the house was largely attended and was conducted by Mr C McAusland and at the grave by Rev A P Stanley of Markdale.
