Margaret was born in England or shortly after her family arrived in Louisiana. Her family immigrated to America about 1844, probably arriving at the port of New Orleans. Her family settled in or near New Orleans. Margaret attended a parish school for girls in New Orleans.

She met Richard Chaffer during the occupation of New Orleans, while Richard was serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. A family story says Margaret ran away from her family to marry Richard, taking her "nannie" with them to Illinois. She left a life of wealth and privilege behind, to marry a drayman's son. They were married in Alton, Illinois, in Sept of 1863.

Richard Chaffer (b. 19 Aug 1837 or 1838 in Appleby, Lincolnshire, England; d. 23 Oct 1877 in Nevada City, Nevada County, California) was the son of Thomas Chaffer and his wife, Elizabeth Ellen. They immigrated to the U.S. from England, by way of New Orleans, in 1850.

About 1869, Richard relocated his wife, and young family to Grass Valley, California, and worked in the mines as a machinist. After his death in 1877, Margaret worked as a private nurse to support their family.

Before 1900, two of Margaret and Richard's daughters died from pulmonary tuberculosis. Their oldest daughter became the wife of George B. Eldred.

At the time of the 1920 census, Margaret was living in the house adjacent to her daughter, Anna Eldred's family.
