A family story says Margaret ran away from her family to marry Richard, taking her "nannie" with them to Illinois. She left a life of wealth and privilege behind, to marry a drayman's son. They were married in Alton, Illinois, in Sept of 1863.

Before 1900, two of Margaret and Richard's daughters died from pulmonary tuberculosis. Their oldest daughter became the wife of George B. Eldred.
At the time of the 1920 census, Margaret was living in the house adjacent to her daughter, Anna Eldred's family.
