There was an obituary for Clara Goering of Pages 1 & 2 of the Tacoma News Tribune on September 6, 1972.

She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1923 and from the State University of Iowa in 1928. Following her graduation, she taught science at Missouri Valley High School, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, for two years. In 1929, she married Dr. William H. Goering, and they moved to Tacoma the same year.

Mrs. Goering was a former Tacoma City Council member and was its first woman member, and she also served as deputy mayor. She was a well-known garden authority and a worker in numerous community projects. From 1952 throughout two decades, she wrote, "Through the Garden," for the News Tribute, a column which she had originated.

Clara Goering was a member of the board of directors of United Way (United Good Neighbors), and she was immediate past president of the Council on Aging. She continued on the board of trustees of the Goodwill Rehabilitation Center, which was planned and achieved during her time as president of the board of Tacoma Goodwill Industries and of the Goodwill Auxiliary. In 1968, she was named regional Goodwill Volunteer of the Year, honored nationally in Denver. At that time, an original painting of her was hung in the foyer of Goodwill Center, in gratitude of her 30 years' devotion to them.

For a complete listing of all of Mrs. Goering's accomplishments, please see her obituary in the Tacoma News Tribute. Also, there were many newspaper articles on Clara Goering in the Tribune
through the years, and I have seen her picture in several online sites for the city of Tacoma. Clara was survived by her husband, a son, and a daughter.
