Alfred Harstad, 100, Mohall, formerly of Minot, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at the Mohall Good Samaritan Center.
Alfred was born Feb. 29, 1912, to John A. and Olina (Wolseth) Harstad, at the Harstad family farm at Wolseth. He was raised on the family farm and attended Wolseth School through the ninth grade. Alfred worked on his father's farm, and in 1934, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for nine months. He then returned home to farm.
Alfred married Violet George on Sept. 24, 1939, at Nidaros Lutheran Church, Wolseth. They farmed until 1956, when they moved to Minot. Alfred drove cattle truck for Farmers Union Federated and Harrington Brothers Livestock for many years. He also drove milk truck for Bridgeman Creamery. He enjoyed meeting many farmers of rural North Dakota.
They enjoyed traveling which took them to 40 states, four Canadian provinces, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and East and West Germany. They wintered 12 years in Apache Junction, Ariz. Violet passed away Feb. 8, 2011.
Alfred enjoyed chariot racing, and was a charter member of the Midwest Chariot Club, winning many trophies over the years. He also enjoyed playing baseball, and played for 25 years in the Ward County League and batted a .500 average. Alfred and Violet had a lot of enjoyment dancing, especially the schottische, polka and waltz, and together they won many trophies and awards. He was an outstanding checkers player, and was a two-time North Dakota Checkers Champion and 12 years runner-up. He was also Champion of the Puget Sound area for one year and runner-up a second year. Other interests were playing cards and board games and gardening. Alfred's greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alfred was a former member of Nidaros Lutheran Church, Wolseth. He was always active in community affairs, holding offices on the township board, the school board, the local chapter of Farmers Union, and was a board member of Nidaros Lutheran Church. When moving to Minot, he became a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. For many years, Alfred was a member of the Blind and Visually Impaired Support Group and a member of the Moose Lodge, both in Minot.
