John was born in County Meath Ireland in about 1829. His parents were John and Ann. He immigrated to Bostoni in about 1850, and in 1858 he began a job with Union Street Railway company as horse-car driver. Previous to entering the street railway business, he was a driver on the stage coach line running from Porter's Hotel in Cambridge to Scollay Square in Boston, and he went to work for the Union Railway Company when that company bought out the horses and other equipment of the stage coach line.
