Gene Hurt was dubbed as "The Old Pro" because of his vast knowledge of lawn and gardening. Hurt had his own weekly TV show for more than 30 years.

Odessan Gene Hurt died last weekend at age 82.

He and his wife, Elizabeth Hurt, moved to Odessa in March of 1949 to work in the oilfields. He later began an exterminating company with his brother. After the death of his brother, Hurt called his father, Webb Hurt, in California to help with the company. The two were in the exterminating business for five years before they expanded Hurt Inc. to include a full nursery, landscaping, flower shop and all-around service provider for commercial and residential lawns and gardens.

Hurt was born in Birmingham, Ala. After high school, Hurt was drafted to fight in World War II. He did his basic training at Fort Stewart, Ga., before serving in Belgium and Germany for the 523 Glider Battalion of the 82nd Air Borne Division of the U.S. Army. Hurt earned three Bronze Battlestars along with other medals for his service.
