Leona B. Carpenter of Naples, Fla., a native of Timberville and a sister of James G. Bowman of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday. Mrs. Carpenter attended Mary Baldwin College, graduated from Duke University and received a degree in nursing from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She did graduate work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. During World War II, she served as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in Texas and Panama and later taught student nursing at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond. Mrs. Carpenter served on the board of trustees of Naples Community Hospital. She was married twice. Both husbands, Paul B. Day, whom she married in 1947, and E. Rhodes Carpenter, are dead. Besides her brother, she is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Ann B. Day of Holden, Mass.; a son, Paul B. Day Jr. of Richmond; and two sisters, Catherine Myers of Cincinnati and Anna Stoneburner of Front Royal. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Woody Funeral Home, 1717 Parham Road, Richmond. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond.
