Despite what is stated on his tombstone, his actual surname almost certainly was spelled "Beautel." He married Fredericka lnu. and fathered John Franklin (b. 09/18/57), Fredericka (b. 01/13/60), and Henry (b. 09/21/63). His whereabouts in 1860 are as yet unknown, but he was a painter by trade and stood 5' 4" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Harrisburg with the regular army February 24, 1864, assigned as a private to Co. B, 10th U.S. Infantry, but died from an as yet unknown disease in Harrisburg. His service records spell his surname "Beutel."

Fredericka applied for a pension as "Beutel" and married a Rader on March 4, 1867.
