In 1860, he was a laborer who, with his sister Juliann, was living with and/or working for the Abram Moore family in Wilkins Township, Allegheny County, Pennsyvlania. He is in the 1860 census as "Bostedo," a surname foreign to Pennsylvania at the time.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Pittsburgh September 19, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 22 as a private with Co. A, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, but died at Camp Curtin. He is in Bates History of Pennsyvlania Volunteers as "Bostedo," in the company register and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Bastido," but his tombstone has "Borsteds." The death date from muster roll is used here although the tombstone has January 13, 1862.
