He was naturalized April 19, 1858, and in 1860 was presumably living in Berwick Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is in the 1863-65 draft registration as a resident of Conewago Township. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-four in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for conscript Joseph W. Hendrix, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He is in the company register as "Rebbel."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 1 as a private with Co. D (and spent some time in Co. I), 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865. He is in Bates and the company descriptive list spell his name "Rebbel," but the company register has it "Rebble."

He married Margaret Schwerber and fathered John A. (b. 03/01/78), Margaret (b. 11/25/80), Catherine A. (b. 02/07/82), Ann Susan (b. 03/31/86), and Mary (b. 01/01/90 - Sr. Miriam Aloysia).

There is some evidence that he may have had a first wife named Mary Little.
