85, longtime resident of Ann Arbor, MI and winter resident of Scottsdale, AZ, died after a brief struggle with an aggressive pancreatic cancer. She died peacefully in the presence of family on March 15, 2011. Born in Lansing, MI on February 24, 1926 to Leroy Stewart Foltz and Emily Louise (Proctor) Foltz, Fayola received her Bachelor of Music in Music Ed and Piano with a minor in organ and voice from Michigan State University (MSU) in 1948. While studying at MSU, she met her future husband, Major (Mac) McKinley Ash, Jr. of Bellaire, MI. They were married on September 2, 1947 in East Lansing, MI. Fayola taught piano for over fifty years, mostly in Ann Arbor, and was the church organist at Chelsea First United Methodist Church for over fifteen years. She belonged to and was a past president of the Ann Arbor Area Piano Teacher's Guild, and member of the American Guild of Organists. Over the years, Fayola accompanied many soloists and substituted at various churches as choir director, organist, and pianist. Fayola and Mac raised their four children in Ann Arbor, and were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church. At Westminster, Fayola was an active participant in the acquisition of the church's pipe organ, directed the children's choir for many years, and served as a deacon and elder. She participated in Community Bible Study (CBS), was a member of P.E.O. Chapter W, and belonged to, and was a past president of the Ann Arbor Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon. Additionally, she volunteered for Audrey's Angels, a musical outreach program in Phoenix, AZ. The couple enjoyed wintering in Scottsdale, where they were able to enjoy hiking and bird watching. Fayola was a member of the Saguaro Club there, as well as a member of Camelback Bible Church in Scottsdale, AZ. Their favorite summer vacation spot was in Mürren, Switzerland, where they enjoyed hiking, bird watching, and photography in the Swiss Alps. Fayola spent many hours playing the organ in the churches in Vechigen and Murren on her trips to Switzerland. In 2010, Fayola was fortunate to realize her lifelong dream of traveling to the Holy Land. She and her granddaughter, Betsy, went on a two-week trip to Israel and Italy, to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and Paul. While on the Mount of Olives for an Easter sunrise service, Fayola hopped on the back of a camel and finally got to have the camel ride she'd wanted to experience since visiting Egypt in the late 60's. Fayola is survived by her siblings, Elva Lea Clark of Allen Park, MI and Eldon Roy Foltz of Laguna Beach, CA; as well as her four children, George (Jean) Ash of Port Huron, MI, Carolyn (Michael, dec.) Gallaway of Charleston, OR; Thomas (Rhonda) Ash of Manchester, MI, and Jeffrey (Deborah) Ash of Ann Arbor, MI. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Drew (Autum) Lum of Wilmette, IL and their two sons, Connor and Aidan; Jennifer Ash of Charleston, SC and her son, Cameron; Brian (LeAnne) Ash of Grass Lake, MI and their daughter, Sydney; Betsy (Steven) Finn of Dexter, MI and their son, Tobias; and Mark (Kara) Ash of Morrisville, NC. Fayola was preceded in death by her husband, Major McKinley Ash, Jr.; her parents, Leroy and Emily Foltz; and her brother, Ermald (Mae) Foltz. A memorial service in celebration of Fayola's life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1500 Scio Church Rd., Ann Arbor, MI on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation (www.lustgarten.org), a non-profit association researching cures for pancreatic cancer (the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States).
