US Congressman. He was born in Rome, Georgia and moved to Texas in 1852. Herndon graduated from McKenzie College in 1859, studied law, and became an attorney in Tyler in 1860. He joined the Confederate Army's Company D, 13th Texas Infantry Regiment for the Civil War, served from 1861 to 1865 and attained the rank of Captain. After the war he returned to practicing law in Tyler. In 1870 he was the successful Democratic candidate for a seat in the US House of Representatives and served two terms, 1871 to 1875. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874, after which he returned to practicing law and became involved in railroad construction and other ventures, becoming wealthy and remaining active until his death in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
