Franklin Pierce Powell was born October 27, 1853 in Poor Fork, Kentucky (Harlan County), son of Ambrose Powell (1828-1896) and Esther Creech (1829-1861).

The 1860 Federal Census for Harlan County, Kentucky shows Franklin P. Powell, age 6, born in Kentucky; living with his father, Ambrose Powell, a farmer, age 31, born in Kentucky; and his mother, Esther, age 29, born in Kentucky. Also living in the household were Franklin's siblings: Sarah, age 9; Lazarus W., age 7; Jasper, age 4; and Nancy, age 2; all born in Kentucky. Also living in the household was Esther's younger brother, John Creech, age 17, born in Kentucky; and Nancy Sergeant, age 67, born in Kentucky.

Franklin's mother died September 4, 1861 in Harlan County, Kentucky and was buried there. Franklin's father married again and had more children.

On December 17, 1876 in Jackson County, Kentucky, Franklin married Susan Emiline Smith who was born November 14, 1860 in Jackson County, Kentucky, daughter of William M. Smith (1836-1922) and Naomi Hurley (1837-1917).

Franklin and Emiline had three known children: John Riley Powell (1880-1946); James Reeves Powell (1883-1940); and Thomas Franklin Powell (1887-1939).

Susan died August 10, 1889 in Fannin County, Texas. On April 29, 1891 in Hunt County, Texas, Franklin married Mary Jane Moore who was born December 15, 1872 in Jackson County, Kentucky, daughter of John Henry Moore and Frances Cope. Franklin had more children with Mary Jane.

The 1900 Federal Census for Township 8, Indian Territory (Choctaw Nation) shows Pierce Powell, age 46, born October 1853 in Kentucky; and his wife, Mary Jane, age 27, born December 1872 in Kentucky. Living with them were two of Franklin's sons by his earlier marriage, James Reeves Powell, age 16, born December 1883; and Thomas Franklin Powell, age 12, born September 1887; both shown as born in Texas. In addition, Franklin and Mary Jane had four children living in the household: Myrtle P., age 8, born May 1892; Allie, age 5, born September 1894; and twins, Ada and Emma, age 2, born October 1897; all born in Texas.

Franklin died February 28, 1920 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in Highland Cemetery. His second wife, Mary Jane, died March 15, 1960, and was buried beside him.
