Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a successful cotton broker in Alabama. Soon after the conflict began his enlisted in the Confederate Army, and served first on the staff of Brigadier General Robert Selden Garnett. After General Garnett was killed during the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, William Starke was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 60th Virginia Infantry in 1861. For his conduct during the Battles of the Seven Days, he was promoted Brigadier General on August 6, 1862. He assumed commanded of his division at August 29, 1862 Battle of Second Bull Run when Brigadier General William Taliaferro was wounded. On September 17, 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, Starke was shot three times in the opening stages, and died of his wounds on the field.
