PETRA SALAS , 66, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Sunday at the Kindred Hospital in Albuquerque following an extended illness. She was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on May 13, 1936, to the late Margarita Montoya. She was married at the Immaculate Conception Church on Sept. 24, 1954, to Richard Salas Sr. She was a foster mother for 16 years and continued to take care of children. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margarita Montoya Mares; stepfather, Pete Mares; husband, Richard Salas Sr.; brother, Max Alirez; sister, Virginia Garcia; and brother, Jerry Alirez on Jan. 20, 2003. She is survived by sons and daughters, Richard Salas Jr. and wife Mary of Denver, Robert Salas of Las Vegas, N.M., Clarence Salas and wife Rose of Gallup, Beth Sides and husband John of Albuquerque, and Mario Salas of California; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Carmen Marquez of Santa Fe, and Betty Alirez and husband Fred of Denver; brothers, Joe Mares and wife Cecilia, and Louie Mares all of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the same church. Cremation will take place after the services, and a private family burial will follow at a later date at the Santo Nino Cemetery in Canoncito. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and all day Sunday, where family and friends may call. Rogers Mortuary.
