Chapman, Mrs. Gertrude (McCartney), a real pioneer of the Firelands, passed away at her home in Sandusky, March 2, 1920, in her 92nd year. She was born in Venice, Erie county, in 1828, the daughter of Willaim McCartney, who was born in Kentucky in 1792; was a Scout under General Harrison in the war of 1812; fought in Croghan's Victory at Ft. Stephenson in 1813; and after the war settled in Venice in 1816. He lived there over 62 years dying in February, 1878, was a prominent citizen and a very large landowner, a banker, a justice of the peace, and otherwise a successful man. Mrs. Chapman was married at the age of 20, in 1848, to Captain James F. Chapman, who served in the Mexican war; he was made colonel of the Thirteenth Wisconsin Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil war and afterward was commissioned brevet brigadier general. General and Mrs. Chapman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Sandusky in 1898, and on September 30, 1900, General Chapman passed away at the age of 84 years. Mrs. Chapman was a remarkable woman in many ways and her life had been one of great usefulness. She had traveled much with her soldier husband; during the rebellion she was with him a great deal and was the first woman who viewed the battle ground at Ft. Donaldson immediately after the surrender. In her earlier days Mrs. Capman was active in the life of the community. She belonged to the W.C.T.U., the Women's Relief Corps, of Clyde, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her life had been one of good works and many have benefited by her good words and influence. She had preserved many valuable relics of her early life, such as a flag brought by her husband from the Mexican war, the revolver and saber carried by him through the war, and his army trunk. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Theo. J.C. Shellhorn, were held at the residence of her great niece, Miss Caroline McCartney, and burial was in the cemetery at Clyde, Ohio.
