She was the daughter of Henry Smith and Hannah Charlotte Schwanke Gillespie.She was born on a farm east of La Prairie, Adams County, Illinois. The family moved to a farm northwest of Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri. She graduated from Palmyra High School. She married Wilfred Lovelace Bowles. They lived first on Wilfred's home farm, then moved in December of 1935 to a farm near Bowen, Hancock County, Illinois. In 1939 Wilfred & her father bought a farm between Bowen & Augusta, Hancock County, Illinois. Wilfred & Elva had 3 sons: Ronald Wilfred - b.1932; Robert Henry - b.1937; Kenneth Wayne - b.1944.
