John H. Appleton Passed Away Monday Morning at His Home in This City.

Following an illness of five weeks from kidney trouble, John H. Appleton, an aged veteran of the civil war and well known resident of this city, died at his home on East Ellsworth street at 9:30 Monday morning. For the past year he had not been in good health on account of a fall that he sustained but except for that he was vigorous for a man of his age. The encroachments of the last disease were rapid and during the last few days he suffered untold agony till relieved by the quieting medicines administered to him.
John H. Appleton was born in Center[sic] county, Pennsylvania, November 27th, 1832, and died in Columbia City, Ind., April 10, 1911, aged 78 years, 4 months, and 13 days. He came with his parents as a boy to Wabash county and later took up land in Whitley county in Thorncreek township. In 1857, June 24th, he was married to Matilda Dupler-Egolf. When the war broke out he went with others and enlisted for the defense of his county, leaving his wife and a family of three children. He served till the close of the war as a private in Company E, 17th Indiana. At the close of the war he returned to this country and remained on this farm till after the death of his first wife, April 11, 1878[sic]. He was married the second time in 1886, to Sarah Beemer and with the exception of two years in that time they have lived in this city. One year was spent on a farm and the other at Marion. A sister, Mrs. Mary Ramey, of Laketon, survives him as do his wife and five children. The children are George Appleton and Mrs. Elizabeth Alkire, of Manistee county, Mich.; Jonathan Appleton, Nashua, Mont.; Aaron Appleton and Mrs. Laura Hively, Thorncreek township. Mr. Appleton was a member of the Baptist church in this city, the George W. Stough Post, G.A.R., and the Odd Fellows order.
The deceased was not only a brave soldier but an honorable and upright citizen who always endeavored to deal fairly and justly with his fellow men. He lead an exemplary life and his good name will be cherished by his family and friends.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at ten o'clock at the Baptist church. Rev. Sanders of Churubusco to officiate; interment at Hively cemetery in Thorncreek township.
