Paul Umphrey was always known in the family as "Tubby." I am not certain of the origins of the name, but it stemmed from his early life in Iowa. He was born September 7, 1924, at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, the youngest child of Geoffrey Paul Umphrey (1897-1931) and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey (1897-1970). Tubby married Lois Ann Thibodeau in 1943 in Pontiac, Michigan. They had three sons and a daughter. Their oldest son, Paul Eugene Jr., known as "Paulie," died in a motorcycle accident in 1967. Their other children are daughter, Sharon Louise (Umphrey) Aldrich (1948-2012), and sons Steven Lynn "Steve" and Thomas Michael "Mike" Umphrey.
