Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered the Union Volunteer Service as a Captain on July 1, 1861 and joined the 29th Missouri Infantry as a Major on June 11, 1863. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel on August 1, 1863, he served as the Inspector General for the 1st Division of the XV Army Corps from August 26, 1863 until March, 1864. He was promoted to Colonel, as Acting Regimental Commander on March 10, 1864 and was wounded in action at Big Shanty, Georgia on June 15, 1864. Recovering, he became the permanent Commander on July 11, 1864 and remained in command of the 29th until the regiment mustered out on June 12, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on June 15, 1865. After the war he remained in the south and was admitted to the Bench and Bar of Labette County, Kansas in April, 1870. He stayed there a short time and did no legal business until he relocated to San Jose, California where practiced law until his death.
