Lou was the sixth of seven children born to Percy "Pete" F. Hanes and his wife, L. Mabel Pope. Lou was in the US Army from 1953-1955. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and served as an instructor AAA Gun Mechanics School. Lou was married three times. He and his first wife, Eve Dwyer, a daughter of Richard J. Dwyer and his wife, Evelyn G. Clow; were married on May 10, 1958 in Downers Grove (DuPage County), Illinois. They had one son, Timothy Russell. Tim was Lou's only child. Lou was an avid bird watcher and a member of the Audubon Society.

Hanes, 71, US Army veteran, retired construction laborer, died at 5:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at his home. At his request, the body was cremated, and no services are scheduled at this time. Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin is in charge of arrangements."
