Boyd was stationed on a PT boat, attained the rank of Gunner's Mate 3C, and while on duty in the English Channel along the coast of France, he was killed August 9, 1944.
His remains were returned to his native Iowa after the end of the war, and he was buried at the Kossuth Cemetery near Mediapolis, alongside other family members, his funeral being July 17, 1948, in Mediapolis.

Mediapolis (IA) -- Services will be held at the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Saturday for Boyd Wendell Brumm, gunner's mate 3-c, who was killed on the English channel, along the coast of France, on August 9, 1944. Dr. Harry J. Findlay will officiate, and military services will be conducted in Kossuth cemetery.
Brumm was born at Mediapolis, on December 6, 1922, and was graduated from Mediapolis high school with the class of 1940. In January 1942, he enlisted in the navy, taking his boot training at the Great Lakes training station. From Great Lakes, Brumm was sent to Melville, Rhode Island, for specialized motor-torpedo boat training. He then served on patrol duty on the Atlantic ocean.
Brumm participated in the invasion of France, his flotilla leading the assault on Cherbourgh.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Brumm, and 2 brothers, William and Dale Brumm, all of Mediapolis; 4 sisters Mrs. Rueben Wuellner, Chicago; Mrs. Harold Herman, Burlington; Mrs. Everett Allen, Des Moines, and Kathleen Brumm, Mediapolis.
Brumm was a member of First Presbyterian church. The body is at the Fry funeral chapel.
