He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley Mitchell Barrows, his sister Wanda Rose and a brother Robert Barrows.
He is survived by his wife Jane Rae Barrows; sons, John "Jay" William Barrows, Jr. (Cindy) of Richmond and James "J.C." Christopher Barrows (Beverly) of Richmond; daughters, Linda Barrows Simpson (Jim) of Mill Valley, California and Anne Barrows Woodruff (Woody) of Emporia; step daughter, Misty Willard (Dean) of Mooresville, NC; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the VFW, The American Legion, Masons, American Society of Agricultural Engineers and a current member of the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Emporia. He was also a Marine Corps Veteran and proudly served in World War II. John designed farm equipment for International Harvester, Franklin Equipment Company and Benthall Manufacturing and retired from the City of Emporia.
A visitation will be held Saturday, 7-8:30, at Echols Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held Sunday, 1:30, at Echols Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Spring United Methodist Church Cemetery, Skippers, Virginia.
