Donald Paul Hernandez, 68, of St. Joseph, passed away at home on October 29, 2012.
Don was born on February 7, 1944, to Natividad "John" and Edna Mae (Ferguson) Hernandez.
Don was a life-long resident of St. Joseph.
Don was the youngest of nine children.
He attended Holy Rosary School and graduated in 1962 from Christian Brothers High School.
Don attended St. Patrick's Church and liked to spend time at the Mir House of Prayer.
Don married Mary Margaret Schafer on July 20, 1974, in Maryville, Mo.
Don was a gifted athlete in his youth as a basketball and softball player, earning Pepsi's Golden Glove Award in 1970.
Don's passion for sports in his youth lead to his coaching of many sports.
Don inspired and coached many youth of the St. Joseph area in little league baseball, youth basketball, bantam league football, and soccer.
During that time, he was proud of the many titles and championships that were earned by his teams.
He loved playing horseshoes and fishing.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
Don was an avid Missouri Tiger fan and Notre Dame fan.
He was proud of his heritage and never missed the St Patrick's Mexican Fiesta.
Don served in the Army, and during that time he served in Vietnam.
Don was a production worker at Rhoune Poulenc for 33 years, where he retired in 1997.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sisters, Mary Mesa and Margaret Guy; and his brothers, David, John and Raymond Hernandez and Joe Gomez.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; Vincent and (Lori Bussell), Christina (Ed) Crouse, Mark (Valorie), and Brian.
Grandchildren are Jessica (David) Tedrow, Leigh Ann Hernandez, Tyler Lown, Rachal, Laurel, Averyl and Gable Crouse, and Izabelle Hernandez; great-grandchildren are Caitlyn and Jackson Tedrow; Don's brothers and lifelong friends, Nate (Pauline) Hernandez, Jr. and Frank (Wanda) Hernandez; sister-in-law, Wanda Hernandez Stewart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Rosary 6 p.m. Friday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Friday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Patrick Catholic Church or donor's choice
