Saint John's Episcopal Cemetery was established in 1843, along with the new church parish created by Bishop Leonidas Polk, the first Bishop of Louisiana. It is located on property donated by George S. Guion, from part of his Ridgefield Plantation. It is also known to some as Saint John's Historic Cemetery.

Although established as an Episcopal burial grounds, it is the final resting place for people of many faiths and walks of life. There is a former governor of Louisiana, former generals, privates, mayors, legislators, business men, doctors, and lawyers, as well as just plain folks amongst those who repose therein. There are temple tombs, brick box tombs, slabs, modern burial vaults, monumental obelisks, as well as ground burials which may - or may not - be marked.
