St Helen's Bishopsgate dates from the year 1210 when a priory of Benedictine nuns was founded on the site. It is the largest surviving parish church in the City of London. It contains more monuments than any other Greater London church apart from Westminster Abbey. It was the parish church to William Shakespeare when he lived in London in the 1590s.



The church was restored in the early 1890s by John Loughborough Pearson. St Helen's survived both ‘The Great Fire of London' and ‘The Blitz' unscathed. However, the church was severely damaged in 1992 and 1993 when two IRA bombs that were set off nearby. The church has since been fully restored although many of the older monuments within it were destroyed.
