Per 100 Years in Montague Co, TX & Texas Handbook; Ranchers & farmers started settling around Stoneburg, Montague, TX in the 1870's possible the first burials at Hopewell were made in the early 1870's. In the early 1880's & 1890's there was a Hopewell School building located in the area of the present-day Hopewell Pavilion. In the 1890's the old Hopewell School building was removed and 11 Dec 1900, Montague Co, TX sold to the citizens of the Hopewell Cemetery Community the west 1/2 of a four-acre lot belonging to Hopewell School District #46 for the sum of $40. This was almost 19 years after the oldest identifiable grave. 2 acres were also acquired for the cemetery that encompassing all early graves located west of old school building. 24 Dec 1911 community met & erected a fence around the cemetery. A pavilion was built in 1914 it was replaced in 1950 after the community recovered from the depression & WWII. In 1937, 1969 & 2020 additional land was acquired as the cemetery grew.
