If the date of the deed may be accepted as proof, the Boutwell Cemetery was the first to be established in Latty or Washington Township. On August 20, 1859, John D. Carlton deeded one acre of land, located in the Northeast Quarter of Section 22, to the trustees of Washington Township, James E. Curtis, Jesse Harrell, and George Gusler, for this cemetery site. The deed is recorded in Volume 8, page 623, Paulding County Record of Deeds. Mr. Carlton was well-known as the first school teacher of the county, teaching near Charloe as early as 1833 or 1834. Another deed, executed May 1, 1896, in which Joseph L. Anderson deed a plot of ground to the township trustees, pertains to this cemetery. The deed makes reference to "The David Mellinger Burying Ground," but whether it is for an addition to the cemetery, or was made to clear the title, or for some other technical purpose is unknown. The deed is recorded in Volume 65, page 324, Paulding County Record of Deeds.
Over the years, the erosion of the soil has created a deep ravine which divides this cemetery into two general areas. The Boutwell Cemetery is located on the very edge of the east bank of the Little Auglaize River and across the stream from the Carlton Cemetery. It may be reached by going one mile north of Mandale on State Route No. 66, thence west to a bridge over the Little Auglaize River. A fence line, located a few rods east of the bridge, should be followed, on foot, to the south about twenty rods to the cemetery site. It is believed that Washington Township's first settler, Joseph Millinger, is buried here.
