(This cemetery should not be confused with the Indian Cemetery near the town of Independence, Inyo County, California. Independence is about 18 miles north of this Lone Pine Indian Cemetery.)
Indian Cemetery of Lone Pine is an active desert cemetery which consists of three clusters of burials spread across the mouth of a narrow canyon which is located west of Lone Pine in the Alabama Hills.
There are aproximately 80 visible burials total among the three hillside clusters. The interments are evidenced by mounds as well as various arrangements of local stone and also wooden crosses and floral offerings. Of the 80 visible burials, 21 have been identified with memorial markers showing initials or names and sometimes dates. It is possible that there are traces of earlier burial locations in this cemetery which have been lost to the elements.
The earliest marked burial is dated 1924. The most recent marked burial is 2013. Several WWII veterans are buried in this cemetery as well.
Indian Cemetery Road is a gravel road which is reached from Tuttle Creek Road. There is no cemetery sign and the area can be entered through a barbed wire gate.
