#4. Old Municipal Cemetery, east of Trenton
...
Location: Occupied the northeast corner of the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Klockner Road, on the grounds of the Trenton Municipal Hospital (late renamed the Donnelly Memorial Hospital).
Comments: Established in 1884 when City Cemetery, Trenton #1, was ordered closed; the remains from City Cemetery soon afterwards are believed to have been buried here. The tract is shown on the Automobile Driving and Trolley Map of Mercer County New Jersey (1905), published by A.H. Mueller & Co. The 1905 Atlas, plate 7, shows the tract was then occupied by hospital buildings, paved driveways and open areas.
The disposition of this cemetery is currently unknown; its function possibly was replaced in 1913 by the nearby City of Trenton Municipal Cemetery, #6 below. Remains may have been removed to that cemetery, but they also could still occupy the paved and open areas of the hospital grounds in the southwest corner of the hospital complex.
On 26 March 1994 the Trenton Times reported that a construction crew, preparing the foundation for a new wing of the county health center, had uncovered skull bones beneath what had been a driveway. This location would be in the general area mentioned above. On 12 November 1994 the newspaper reported the discovery of "a second set of bones" in the area. How these various sets of remains may be related to a possible earlier family burial ground, the City Cemetery, the Old Municipal Cemetery once located there, or subsequent hospital interments is not known.
