THE STONES FOR MOST OF THESE GRAVES ARE MISSING.
This old burying ground is located in the southeastern part of the City of Hudson. It is now a part of Webster Park that contains a ball diamond, picnic shelter, and playground equipment along the far eastern edge of the park. It is also the location of the large "Hudson" water tower, which is visible for several miles, and that is situated in the far southeastern corner of the park.
Known burials occurred here from 1836 through 1897. The first recorded burial here was that of James S., two year old child of Dudley and Phebe Worden, in February 1836.
After Maple Grove opened August 17, 1867, burials here continued at a slower pace. There were probably many re-interments to Maple Grove from this cemetery; however, there is little written documentation concerning re-interments. For the first 8 years of Maple Grove's existence there are no known sexton reports. Approximately 400 pre-Maple Grove (Aug. 1867 or earlier) deaths are memorialized on stones at Maple Grove.
A list of names comes from the 1938 reading done by Harriet Cole Bowen for the DAR.
Eunice Lamb explained the transfer to Maple Grove in her 1968 book, The John-Simon Mills Line, section 3, page 3-189:
'All of the founders of Hudson, Mich. were buried in the "old cemetery," at the end of what is now Madison Street. . .some time before 1959. . . stones which remained unbroken were transferred. . .[and] reset very close together in Maple Grove Cemetery.'
The DAR list of gravestones contains 139 total stones that were in place in 1938. There will be additional memorials added, as research of newspaper obituaries, church records, and death certificates remains ongoing.
-----------------
As of 2014 we have been unable to uncover any records for this graveyard, with the exception of the 1938 list done by the DAR of Adrian. The only thing found was the Gibbons Plat map of the 1840's which includes the area at the south of Madison Street marked "Graveyard." This plat map includes no detailed layout of the blocks and lots.
In 2015 some 1897 photos of this cemetery were discovered at the Hudson Museum. See Randall Mills memorial 101571098.
