Not all persons residing at the County Farm were ‘poor.' Without nursing homes and with no family to care for them as they aged and became frail, the Poor Farm became a place of refuge for those individuals and was renamed the County Home for the Aged in 1918.
A small cemetery was located on the farm although the number interred cannot be absolutely confirmed. From county records, county board minutes,or obituaries more than 30 persons died and were likely interred at the Poor Farm. Without information of their being interred in other cemeteries, all are included in the Poor Farm Cemetery listing.
Descendants have relayed stories of ancestors known to have resided at the farm and were assumed to have died there. Unfortunately death records confirming this information have not been located so their names are not included at this time.
Written newspaper articles tell of the County Board's order to destroy the cemetery in the 1930's. This could not be confirmed in Board minutes. Newspaper articles also described how the named markers in the cemetery were thrown into the woods prior to plowing up the cemetery for a field; however, no evidence has been found to support those statements. Based on conversations with desendants of the caretakers, it seems likely that the cemetery was plowed up for farming purposes between 1945 and 1949.
Additions to the cemetery listing or corrections are welcomed.
