In 1855, the Most Reverend Peter Richard Kenrick, then Archbishop of St. Louis, purchased this strip of land at the corner of Brooks and Main streets for $200 from Christopher and Catherine Kolkmeyer. The plot measured 99 feet by 462 feet and was surrounded on two sides by a stone wall, 4.5 feet high. It was outside the city limits.
It was named St. Peter's Cemetery after the only Catholic Church in Jefferson City at that time. It is believed that remains of those buried at the original cemetery were reinterred here.
There was no sexton, so no official records exist showing who is buried there. High school students surveyed the cemetery in 1940 and reported between 144-163 burials. By that time, the cemetery had suffered significant damage and neglect and it is likely there were originally more burials than this.
By 1883, the cemetery was reaching full capacity and 5.5 acres was purchased nearby on West Main Street for $650 and St. Peter's Cemetery #2 was established. The last recorded burial in St. Peter's #1 was Ellen Brannan Riley who died in September 1885.
