Youngman Family Cemetery
Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Oley Township: From Rt. 73 in Oley turn right onto De'Turk Rd. and a few blocks in around the bend turn onto Moravian School Rd. Proceed about 3/4 mile to crest of hill. to 41 Moravian School House Rd. on the left as the terrain begins to descend down the other side.
Size: Not yet measured or determined from historical references.
History: There are at least two graveyards in this area. "The title of the land upon which the Moravian School house stands was originally secured by a patent deed, granted by John, Thomas and Richard Penn to John Diedreich Youngman; the survey of which was taken in 1735, comprising 163 acres. Among the joiners of Youngman's survey are mentioned the names of Widow Bertolet, Widow Kearson, John Bowman, Leinbach and DeTurk, besides two lines along vacant land at this date. He had built the first house, a small
log cabin, close to a brook in the meadow some distance below the residence of Daniel Herbein, the present owner of this property.
Even part of this farm house was built by Youngman. He with some of his family lie buried close in the rear of this house, where he ~ last lived. The reason assigned for this direction is said to have been his prejudices against the Moravians, whose principles he did not entertain, and whose infant institution he did not wish to foster, for a burying ground was already established here at that time. George Youngman became an early convert to the Moravian faith and ... exerted himself with the erection of buildings. A more desirable place for natural beauty ... is not found in this vicinity. After so much time and labor had been expended, differences arising between Zizendorf and some of the members of the congregation led directly or indirectly to the abandoning of this institution. In a recent visit to the cemetery with our friend, Mr. Abraham De'Turk, one of the oldest inhabitants in the neighborhood .. over 50 graves are recognizable ... and many more rest here without any mark. In 1854 the Frieden congregations were incorporated. The incorporation included a 4 acre cemetery. Though recently established, we find that many of the lots are already occupied; ... families who were
obliged to bury on private grounds .. in some instances remove their whole family hither." References include: Chapter 7: The Moravians and Chapter 12: Friedensburg, from "Fragments of the Past" by Peter G. Bertolet, M.D. Hearsay provides suspect that on site is a separate burial ground for Indians. Gravemarkers and inscriptions: Broken remains of tombstones still exist in the wooded area of this location. Reference: a list of Oley
