Located in Herrljunga Township, about 9 Km southeast of the town of Annelund and just off highway 182, the Od Church Cemetery is a small graveyard surrounding Od Church (Od Kyrka) and now belongs to the Skölvene Parish.
The church was originally built in stone in 1140 and has been lovingly maintained and preserved as well as enlarged over the centuries. To the northwest of the churchyard lies an ancient pre-christian burial ground dating back to the bronze age which contains numerous stone circles, mounds and cairns.
More than 10,000 burials were made in this cemetery over its nearly 1,000 years of existence. However, headstones for the most part only exist for the past century or so since the use of monuments such as headstones is recent. The early custom was a burial mound marked with a simple iron or wooden cross, if any marker was used at all. The earliest examples of monuments began for burials of the nobility, landed gentry and clergy.
In the mid to late 1800s, many younger inhabitants of the village of Od emigrated to North America in search of better opportunities.
