In about 1756, John Reed 1735-1809 and his brothers (Eldad, Madad, and Moses) left Hopewell community in Mercer County, NJ and followed the Great Philadelphia wagon road to the Yadkin River Valley. They were part of the migration that established the Jersey Settlement in NC.
In about 1786, John bought 560 acres at the mouth of Flat Creek where it joins the Yadkin River and in 1788 added 300 more acres up Flat Creek. The Reed Graveyard is located on the Reed Plantation alongside the river.
John's four sons: Moses 1761-1810, David 1770-1843, John 1777-1839, and Noah 1881-1924 inherited and divided his land according to John's will when he died in 1809. Moses died soon after his father in 1810. In John's will, his wife Mary Drake Reed 1737-1830 was bequeathed the East room of the house, the household furniture, and the privilege of a support on the plantation during her natural life.
The cemetery was surveyed on 7 Jul 1937 by the Carolina Aluminum Company and recorded on microfilm in the Rowan County Library. This was transcribed and published in 1963 by Avery H Reed in a family genealogy. It was also transcribed in 1986 on page 110 of the Cemetery Records of Davidson County NC, Vol III, Central Section.
Parts of the former Reed lands at Flat Creek were inundated by Tuckertown Reservoir when the Yadkin River was dammed in 1962. Most of the land near the lake became the property of Alcoa Aluminum Company. Recreation was promoted on the lake, and a boat access ramp was constructed at the Reed homestead site. Access is provided by the Wildlife Access Road (2191) off the River Road (2152).
