The three acres of grassland is Oklahoma's first green cemetery. Green Haven Cemetery is a natural burial ground where deceased individuals are buried without embalming or casket, headstones, concrete vaults, liners, mausoleums, headstones, sculpted markers or permanent vases. There are no manicured, fertilized lawns with regular mowing, and no paved roads. The cemetery is a meadow with prairie flowers.
The Green Haven Cemetery allows families the option to lay loved ones to rest in a serene and natural environment. Natural Burial, commonly referred to as "Green Burial," utilizes:
- Sustainable burial methods
- 100% biodegradable materials
- Earth friendly excavation and technology
- Everything placed in the ground at Green Haven is non- toxic and biodegradable, allowing it to return naturally to the earth.
- In addition, each burial contributes to the ongoing restoration of Green Haven as a thriving, native ecosystem.
As part of the restoration efforts, each family has the opportunity to have a native tree, shrub, flower or groundcover planted in the memory of their loved one. Also available for memorialization are boulder-sized, engraved river rocks. These grounds are kept as a natural area. Maintenance is minimal and does not involve irrigation, fertilizers or pruning.
Bill Bernhardt, Jr is the president of Green Haven Cemetery.
