This cemetery is on one of the old family estates of Fauquier Co., Virginia and was originally created by Robert Fletcher is titled 'Oak Springs.' It is approx 5 miles south of Uperville, VA. on Rt. 712, on the left side of the road where there is a small gateway w/signage for same--which today leads to the 'Mellon Estate." As of this writing, the second wife of Paul Mellon (b: 11 Jun 1907; d: 1 Feb 1999)--Mrs. Rachel Lambert (Lolyd) "Bunny" Mellon lives there with her staff; she is now over a 100 years old and not in the best of health.
The FLETCHER/ROKEBY Cemetery is on the grounds of Oak Springs, and one must get a 'pass' from the guard next to the parking area just off of Rt. 712 before being able to venture up to this cemetery. Under no circumstances will a visitor be allowed to venture any where near the main house. Oak Springs sits on some 4,000+ acres of lovely rolling hillside which was originally all owned by Fletcher's who lost the land in tax sales, sometime just after the end of the Civil War. Family lore says that the Yankee's took all the Fletcher 'horse stock' from family members (that they had been raising there for years for 'heavy farm work') on several forging raids through the valley. So in essence, the Fletcher's were left with no way to pay for much of anything well into the forseeable future.
Upon the death of Paul Mellon's first wife, Mary (Conover) Mellon, b: 25 May 1904; d: 11 Oct 1946, she was said to have been buried in the FLETCHER Cemetery. This cemetery later became known as the FLETCHER/ROKEBY Cemetery with an agreement reached between Mr. Mellon and Fletcher decedants there in the area--which Mr. Mellon promised 'perpetual care amd maintenance' to this approximately three-quarter acre cemetery if he would be granted one-fourth of the burial ground for his own family members; this permission was gladly granted.
Upon the completion of the building of TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH in the late 1950's on the west side of Upperville, which Mr. Mellon commissioned, he had his former wife Mary reinterred there--and she may have been the first burial there in that cemetery. Upon Paul Mellon's death on 1 Feb 1999 he was also buried there.
