Kings Langley Priory was founded in 1308 by Edward II in fulfilment of a vow made when in peril. The priory existed for 230 years, until Prior Richard Yngworth surrendered it to Henry VIII's commissioners at the end of 1538. It was then re-founded as a Dominican Nunnery in 1557 for the nuns from Dartford, but was dissolved in 1558 when the nuns moved back home.
