Wolf Cemetery
Herron, Baxter County, Arkansas, USA
The Wolf Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in North Central Arkansas. The cemetery is located south of Norfork, Arkansas, on Baxter County Road 68. The cemetery lies on the south side of the railroad track in the White River bottom. During the construction of the railroad some graves were relocated to make room for the railroad right of way. It may be that some graves were not discovered and are actually under the right of way or that some are on the north side of the railroad.
Over the years, the cemetery has been known by various names as well as the Wolf Cemetery including Wolf-Adams Cemetery, Chastain Cemetery, Pleasant Run Cemetery, and Herron Cemetery. Now it is always called the Wolf Cemetery. The use of the cemetery basically ceased early in the first decade of the twentieth century. Since then there has only been one burial. James Spencer Litton deeded the cemetery property to The Wolf Cemetery Endowment Fund with the stipulation that when he or members of his family died the remains could be buried there. When he died in 1986, as per his instructions, he was buried in the cemetery, but with the grave in a north-south direction instead of the common east-west manner.
A three tablet marker was placed in the cemetery in March 2010 through efforts of The Wolf Cemetery Endowment Fund. One marker lists the names of the individuals that were known to be interred in the cemetery during the Territorial Period and the Pre-Civil War Period along with their death dates. Another of the tablet markers has the names of the individuals buried there in the Post-Civil War Period. Those two tablet flank a tablet in memory of Maldred Meredith Wolf who died in 1823, and her grave was the oldest one with a marker. The earliest known burial at the cemetery was Josiah Settles, who died around 1820; however, his grave is not marked.
