Chaperito Cemetery is located in a remote but starkly beautiful location, very near the Gallina River. County Road B47A can hardly be described as a thru-fare, but it is mapped right next to the cemetery. When we visited in October of 2015, we were sure to carry enough water and equipment to be self-sufficient for a couple of days in case of a breakdown. Regardless that the cemetery had interments dating from the 1880's, many headstones were completely readable. As is typical with remote cemeteries in New Mexico, there were a proportional amount of markers, and obvious gravesites, whose identities had been lost to the elements and history.

The cemetery comprises about one and one-half acres, in a square shape. There were reminders that the cemetery had once been circumscribed by a rock wall, very little of which remained. Perhaps a handful of graves had what could be described as a recent decoration. The cemetery was in generally poor and unmaintained condition, as would be expected for a cemetery of an abandoned community that was once an area of farming and ranching, with few resources. The history of the town indicates it once had a post office, and the ruins of nearby buildings suggest there might have been public businesses.
