AKA - Far West Graveyard or Cantonment Far West Cemetery
Directions:
In Wheatland, turn east off Highway 65 onto Main Street, which turns into Spencville Road.
In 1849 the United States Government established Camp Far West about four miles east of the present-day city of Wheatland. Two companies of soldiers were stationed there for about two years as protection for the earliest settlers. It was abandoned in May of 1852. At that time Lt. Davis and a company of about 40 men of Co. E were ordered to establish a post in Cottonwood to provide protection to the settlers.
The log buildings were left behind but no longer exist. This site served as a graveyard for the post and the emigrant trail. The area is marked by a stone monument but is on private property.
At the Marysville Library there is information indicating that there are at least 30 sunken graves, but only 5 names being identified as being buried in this spot. Four names appear on a marker placed there by the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
1. Pvt. George Eckweller, Co. F. 2nd Inf., 1849
2. Pvt. Newton Barney, Co. F 2nd Inf., 1850
3. Pvt. ?? Baldwin, Co. F 2nd Inf., 1850
4. Pvt. John Stephenson, Co. F 2nd Inf., 1849
5. The fifth person listed was a child, no name 1850
